One of the first lessons in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is that content is king. It is also the second and third lessons.
There is nothing more important that original and engaging content when it comes to being ranked by all the major search engines.
You can of course pay people to target keywords, manage Adwords and all manners of other things to get you to that No1 spot o Google, Bing or whatever but, what search robots search for is not what people search for.
Let us try to explain as best we can for the non-internet technical;
If you search for a website design design company there will be a myriad of search terms you are likely to use depending on what you are looking for but, it is extremely unlikely that you will search for “cheap website design” alone as, there will be slews of results, most of which will be of little or no use to you.
Even after a few attempts you are likely to get much more specific, after seeing loads of results for London (when you’re in Edinburgh) in the paid Google or Bing ads. So then you might search for, “cheap website design Edinburgh” to try to get a local business you can talk with.
Of course you can target that key phrase but, it’s just as likely that sites have targeted those very keywords, strung together and all too often displayed as an advert. Probably with London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and a whole bunch more besides. Often these are by national agencies using keywords to get referral fees.
We see this in appliance repairs, spares, driving instructors, car hire, bus hire and loads more. In fact, almost every industry you look at.
Targeting nationally and targeting locally are different and require a different mindset to accomplish with, in our experience and opinion, content being the best possible way to do this.
Content offers a rich and extensive way to promote your business that lasts and returns results over time that are solid, not just until the next search engine update. It offers a way for you to explain why potential customers or clients should choose you instead of someone else and, it’s not as expensive as bidding high fees on select keywords for poor results.
Even if you do not use our services or ever intend to do so, focus on your content, it will pay dividends in time and provide a far better return than just throwing money at the problem.
The reason that we say this is because, in recent years the search engines have gotten smarter and they will rank sites with good, authorative and unique content higher than those that have little or no content. The days of just launching a website brochure or catalogue and it being successful online by targetting a few select keywords are over and, have been for some time.
Internet users have also become far more savvy in the way that they search for products and services.
